Deepings Churches Together After a number of years of joining together for occasional events, our churches formed Deepings Churches Together. Our aims are:
~ to work together as far as possible in encouraging member churches in the expression of their faith;
~ to worship together on a regular basis; and
~ to find ways of expressing the life of Christ in our local community
The group comprises:
~ Deepings Methodist Church - Church Street, Deeping St James;
~ Open Door Church (Baptist) - Spalding Road, Deeping St James;
~ Our Lady and St Guthlac's Church (R C) - Hereward Way, Deeping St James;
~ The Priory Church (C of E) - Church Street, Deeping St James;
~ St Guthlac's Church (C of E) - Church Street, Market Deeping.
The St Guthlacˇ¦s Fellowship The Fellowship is a group of churches, which are dedicated to St Guthlac. The churches comprise:
~ Crowland Abbey in Lincolnshire - the abbey was founded near the site of Guthlac's hermitage,
~ Astwick in Bedfordshire,
~ Branston in Lincolnshire,
~ Deeping St James - Our Lady and St Guthlac (Roman Catholic) in Lincolnshire,
~ Little Cowarne in Herefordshire,
~ Market Deeping in Lincolnshire,
~ Fishtoft in Lincolnshire,
~ Knighton (district of Leicester), Leicestershire,
~ Little Ponton in Lincolnshire,
~ Passenham in Northamptonshire
~ Stathern in Nottinghamshire
A number of other churches are also associated with the group ~ Repton (the monastery where Guthlac trained) in Derbyshire, and St Pega's Hermitage (Guthlac's sister's religious house) at Peakirk (Pega's church) in Peterborough.
The Group was formed in 1987, and meets twice a year:
~ in the spring, on a Saturday afternoon as close as possible to St Guthlac's day (11th April) at one of the member churches; and
~ in the summer, on the Friday evening after St Bartholomew's day (24th August), at Crowland Abbey to coincide with its annual Festival.
These events include a special service, a meal and opportunities to renew old friendships and make new ones.
On 11th April each year there is also a service in the Saxon crypt of St Wystan, Repton, followed by a picnic lunch.
PRAYER FOR THE MONTH Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light,
pour into the hearts of your faithful people the brilliance of your eternal splendour,
that we may have the darkness of our souls dispelled,
and so be counted worthy to stand before you
in that eternal temple where you live and reign,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
